How do we work? Stories of our employees

I worked my way up to this position gradually. From being a labourer, a driver, a fitter working on halls, a warehouseman, right up to head of assembly. What I enjoy most of all is communicating with people and especially when the day goes according to plan, as it should.

After the owner you’re officially the firm’s most loyal employee. How do you look back on those early days? I really enjoy remembering those times at the beginning. I was the firm’s second employee when I started. More people gradually joined us and it was a great team. Most of all it all worked well, one for all and all for one, as they say. The way I see it today, that’s missing a lot from all the teams here, and that’s a great pity.

I’ve been here for more than twenty years now. There have been two occasions when I wanted to leave, but I always figured it wouldn’t pay off and I wouldn’t earn more anywhere else, and I like it here, after all.

What do you enjoy about your work, and what do you dislike? “I enjoy the work and I’m glad I don’t have to commute. Also, we have a great team here. It’s hard to say what I don’t like... I’d probably welcome better equipment such as machines and the exhaust system. And what about the management? Everyone occasionally gets annoyed with their superior and I also think they could come and check in on people more and chat to them. It would also be great to see at least some sort of benefits, such as a contribution towards our pension, commuting costs or for sport for youngsters.”

After I arrive I take a look at what we need to do. I get everything ready during the day and check with the guys to make sure everything is in order. I’m in a new position and I really enjoy it.

You finished here not long ago, so what convinced you to return? “I left because I thought that painting in a box wasn’t work I could do until I retire. My new job involved clean and easy work, but the night shifts started to bother me. I couldn’t cope with 6 night shifts in a row. Coming back here was my first idea. I am and have always been happy here. I like getting things ready, and what I don’t like? When we have too much on our plate :-) I don’t like to see spoiled things returned. But I really enjoy preparing the things we have to paint.”

Every day is different, depending on what needs to be done. I do whatever I’m asked to do. I feel at home here and I like the people, so let’s hope they stay that way.

What do you like most and least about the work? “I like the diversity most of all. The fact that you never know what to expect and no two days are ever the same. I enjoy it when I get a call at two thirty in the morning asking me to go somewhere. What I find most annoying, on the other hand, is when two things clash and I don’t have enough time, which is stressful. I’m an easy-going person and I’ve never come into conflict with anyone here. Sure, we sometimes have a go at one another about something, but in the 16 years I’ve been here I haven’t been irritated by anything.”
